FP Show #177: How to Turn your Expertise into an Empire – Vickie Sullivan with James Rick

Posted by Mavreen on January 14, 2012

Vickie is a market strategist for experts, a career choice she stumbled upon quite by accident. She started out as a promoter of a personal growth speaker until she just fell in love with speakers whom she discovered to be “good people who do fabulous things in the world and don’t hurt anybody.” As she worked with speakers, she saw some trends happening in the marketplace and pointed her clients in that direction. Eventually, she started to walk her own talk as her clients attributed their subsequent success to her help.

In this interview, Vickie shares some tips on how people can package themselves with the message they want to get out which should always stand out from the rest. What makes her sharing stand out is she gives examples of personalities whose specific strategic approach have met with much success.

HOW TO BE EFFECTIVE WITH YOUR MESSAGE

• PAY ATTENTION TO THE MARKETPLACE

-     Add a fresh voice to the conversations that are already happening

-     Intersect what people want with what you have

-     Determine what practical application people can do with your gift

HOW TO MAKE YOUR CONTENT STAND OUT

  1. PREDICT THE FUTURE – base it on your past experiences and analyses you’ve done, and tell people to prepare for it
  2. SOUND THE ALARM – tell people to watch out for something that can get them
  3. REDEFINE THE JOURNEY – tell people how the journey they’re taking can be different from what they think it is
  4. CALL THE GAME – point out the white elephant in the room, that is, bring out the topic that nobody wants to talk about

VICKIE’S BURNING TIP

• ALWAYS LEAD PEOPLE WITH THE NEXT STEP

-     If you’re a speaker or writer, do a smaller project first to give people a sample of your work

FINAL THOUGHTS

• If you verbalize the invisible, people think you’re a guru.
